On the Nature of Faith

Faith is the belief in something for which there can be no tangible proof. Most religious adherence is founded upon accounts received from others—a form of hearsay. Countless individuals obey the rules of a holy book without any direct communication with its originator, and billions believe in a divine power because of reported miracles, relayed by people who were not present when these events supposedly occurred.

The Folly of Denunciation and the Universality of Faith

Yet to reject the concept of faith is truly unwise. Faith is not a possession only of the religious. While the most devoted religious leader cannot offer undeniable evidence of his god, the scientist who declares the universe devoid of a deity is equally unable to prove his claim. Both individuals depend on their own form of faith to make sense of profound mysteries they can never fully comprehend. There is no conclusive evidence for the existence of God. Similarly, there is no definitive proof that God does not exist. If scientific inquiry cannot conclusively establish that there is no God, then it must, by its own principles, accept the possibility of a deity’s existence.

The Human Condition

However, human nature is inherently influenced by base instinct, strong emotion, and a lack of objectivity. A person will commit violence against another of their own kind for reasons that will be irrelevant in a thousand years, and likely even in ten. While you have perceived the Light from afar and chosen to move toward it—if only out of curiosity—there are millions more who have deliberately turned their backs on its radiance.
